In Acts 5, Ananias and Sapphira are dishonest about the sale of their land and they both die as a result of lying to the Holy Spirit. The apostles continue preaching and performing miracles, but are arrested and put in prison. They are eventually released by an angel of the Lord and continue to preach in the temple. The high priest and the Sanhedrin condemn the apostles, but a wise Pharisee named Gamaliel advises caution, suggesting that if the apostles' teachings are from God, they will prevail despite being persecuted. The apostles are flogged, but continue to preach and rejoice in their suffering.
