And his customers return because they see that passion translated into life-long friendships. "He's an essential piece to our farming puzzle," said Katie Dilse, Scranton, N.D. "The roar of his combines coming down our road brings goose bumps! Jim, with his entire crew, creates an intensity to our farming operation. His work ethic is second to none. His business model on a handshake is the reason he's so much more than a custom harvester, he's like a Grandpa to our sons. In the hustle and bustle, he makes time to stop for a smile and a joke. He loves his job, and it shows. And we love him." Jim is loyal to his business partners. In 1988, he was selected by MacDon Industries to test their prototype 36 foot Draper header. "When they arrived with the header I was skeptical that something that big could work," he recalls. "It looked like a man among boys when it sat in line with my other machines. It was a real crowd stopper along the road. People would just stop and gape, it was just so darn big." The following season he ordered two of MacDon's headers and has been a customer ever since. Jim is a founding member of U.S. Custom Harvesters and has served on the board of directors and as president of the organization. In 2013, Jim and his crew were featured in the documentary film, The Great American Wheat Harvest. He played a pivotal role in telling the story of harvest and in helping the film's producer raise the funds needed to produce the film. Jim has been called by many "the best in the business" and his passion continues to inspire today.
