John 8 is a lengthy account of Jesus' encounter with the Pharisees and a woman caught in adultery. The chapter begins with the Pharisees testing Jesus by bringing a woman caught in adultery before him and asking if she should be stoned, as was the punishment under the law of Moses. Jesus responded by saying, "Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her" (John 8:7), which led to the Pharisees leaving one by one. Jesus then told the woman that he did not condemn her, but that she should leave her life of sin.The chapter also includes several teaching moments by Jesus, including when he referred to himself as "the light of the world" (John 8:12) and told the Pharisees that if they knew him, they knew the Father. He also spoke about his impending death, saying "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (John 8:32). John Chapter 8 ends with the Pharisees trying to stone Jesus for saying that he existed before Abraham, but he was able to slip away from them.
