Luke 1 Mary Visits Elizabeth - Time - in the days of King Herod of Judea - there was a priest named Zechariah belonging to the priestly order of Abijah - His wife, Elizabeth was a descendant of Aaron – the priestly tribe - Both of them were righteous before God – living blamelessly according to all the commandments and regulations of the Lord. - They were childless - The reason – Elizabeth was barren and both were getting on in years - There’s a long list of barren women in the Bible Barren Women in the Bible http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/topics/barren.html Here is a list of barren women in the Bible (In the Bible it is always the women who are barren, never the men.) Ø Sarah, Abraham's first wife But Sarai was barren; she had no child. Genesis 11:30, 16:1-2 Ø Rebekkah, Isaac's wife Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren. Genesis 25:21 Ø Rachel, one of Jacob's wives Rachel was barren. Genesis 29:31 Ø Manoah's nameless wife, Samson's mother There was a certain man ... whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren. Judges 13:2 Ø Samuel's mother, Hannah Elkannah ...had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah.... The Lord had shut up her womb. 1 Samuel 1:1-5 Ø Elisabeth, John the Baptist's mother They had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren. Luke 1:7 Barren in her old age, Elizabeth was another of the miracle mothers in the Bible. She conceived and gave birth to a son. She and her husband named him John, as an angel had instructed. Like Hannah before her, she dedicated her son to God, and like Hannah's son, he also became a great prophet, John the Baptist. Elizabeth's joy was complete when her relative Mary visited her, pregnant with the future Savior of the World. Jesus through the eyes of Elizabeth · In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country · where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth · When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb · And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit · and exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. · And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? · For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy. · And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.”
