Gautham Ravichander is the Head of Policy Initiatives, E-Government foundation. Dr. Umamaheshwaran Rajasekar is the Head of the Climate Centre for Cities and Chair of the Urban Resilience Unit at NIUA. In this episode, 'Understanding the Future of Technology in Waste and Sanitation’, with Mr Ravinchander and Dr Rajasekar, we explore the topic of solid waste management from a technology and behavioural perspective from source to sink. In this first part of the episode, we start the conversation by understanding the status of waste management within the municipal corporation in India. This is followed by a discussion on variation in collection and processing of waste, and Construction and Demolition waste in Indian. They further discuss how waste management practices are to be considered in densely populated urban areas, the role of technology in the scientific management of landfills. Additionally, they discuss how organic waste can be processed, treated, and reused at the household level. They also bring the cultural and behavioral aspects in terms of waste dumping in natural water bodies & on land. Further, the speakers give their suggestions on how citizens can be encouraged to segregate waste at the source, reduce waste reaching the landfills, strategies to reduce waste dumping in sewage and storm water channels, and ensuring the well-being of sanitation workers, their work equipments and right to a dignified life.
